New Bill Would Allow Home Marijuana Cultivation

Cannabis New Hampshire

Currently, no one can grow their own medical marijuana in New Hampshire. A bill, now in its drafting stage, hopes to change that this year. State Representative Renny Cushing is sponsoring the bill to make home growing legal for medical marijuana patients.

Connecticut and New Hampshire are the only states that prohibit home growing for medical marijuana in New England, according to Seacoast Online.  The bill would allow patients that live 30-miles or more from a dispensary to grow marijuana at home. Medical marijuana has been legal since 2013 in the state.

The bill would also help make medical marijuana more affordable for those in financial distress by allowing them to grow their own.

Cushing said, “There’s a significant cost for some people, so to me, it’s a matter of economic justice. The people who can’t afford the medical marijuana should be able to cultivate it on their own.”

Matt Simon from Marijuana Policy Project says that marijuana seeds are cheap. The cost of a home grow can still be expensive. Low-quality equipment can be purchased for a few hundred dollars, but those that are serious about growing their medicine might spend thousands because growing marijuana isn’t an easy task.
